We unite with the Casa Materna to celebrate 20 years of service to over 15,300 mothers and newborns and lift up the women and men who daily make this possible! And the Casa staff gives thanks for the friends. For 20 years, friends throughout the world have helped keep the doors of Casa Materna open to welcome rural mothers with high-risk pregnancies. In 2010, Friends of the Casa Materna funded 2/3 of the Casa's $150,000 expenditures. We thank you for continuing to choose the Casa Materna Mary Ann Jackman as one of the many good works you support!

In this issue of the Casa Materna newsletter, we share about the important ambulance appeal that we have underway. The ambulance allows for safe and reliable transportation to and from the Regional Hospital in Matagalpa as well as to other regions when needed. We are making great progress towards our goal but are still in need of additional support to make the purchase of a new ambulance a reality. Within this issue, we also learn about several friends of the Casa Materna, from all over the country, who chose to have alternative celebrations, including a wedding and two birthday parties. These individuals encouraged guests to make donations to the Casa Materna in lieu of gifts! Finally, we are also excited to share with you a new video highlighting the ongoing dedication of the Casa staff and the incredible mothers they serve.

A Tribute to our Friend - Pat Doyle
Pat Doyle
We thank all our friends who sent notes and held Pat and her family in their prayers as they passed these last five months lovingly attended to in home Hospice Care. We are grateful, too, that Pat was able to be kept pain free enjoying time with family and friends. In a final visit with Pat in early February, I asked, "and how shall we be connected once I am back in Nicaragua and after the time of your 'passing over,' Pat?" Immediately, against the backdrop of gray Michigan skies, she replied "It will be with the sunshine, Kitty. We will meet in the sunshine!" How perfect then that Pat's passing came (April 14th, 2011) in the beauty of springtime when blossoming trees and flowers of every shade abound, nourished by rain and brought to full glory by the sunshine. –Kitty Madden
